For the latest Lord Combustion Services staff profile we speak to Alison Smith about her work, the enjoyment she gets from working for the company and her role working with colleagues across the business.
What are the main responsibilities in your role?
My main duties are related to the financial and accounts functions within the business I am also involved in projects within the company including development of new systems and marketing.
Who do you work with directly in the Lord team?
My role requires interaction with all members of the Lord team including our field based engineers and the board of directors.
What jobs did you have before you joined Lord?
I joined the company in January 2022. Prior to my joining I have worked in finance and project roles, in the automotive, logistics and engineering manufacturing sectors, during this time I have been involved in multiple projects involving the development and implementation of new software systems.
What is a typical day in your role like?
Although my activities are primarily associated with accounts functions within the business as Lords is such a reactive company this often involves a change of plan as we react to our client needs.
What do you enjoy about working for Lord?
There is a good team spirit at Lords. The working environment is good with defined structures and procedures in place. Communication is good and people are not afraid to ask questions if need be.
What is the best bit of advice you would give somebody starting at Lord?
I would encourage people to be part of the team. Communication is key here in order to learn. If you put the effort into the work you will be rewarded.
What has been your most pleasing accomplishment in your working career to date?
I was involved in a business start up where I had total responsibility for the finance functions within the business, setting up new systems and gaining familiarisation with new software.
Which skills did you bring to Lord from your previous work?
My academic qualifications and previous works in finance, special projects and systems enable me to be analytical in stress testing new systems and procedures and also looking for trends when reviewing accounts.
What have been the most challenging parts of the job?
Coming from a career in different fields of engineering, I had to learn new terminology for the building services industry.
What are your interests outside of work?
I love the outdoors and enjoy climbing and mountain biking. I am an avid reader and I have a huge interest in alternative therapies.
