To introduce you to the team at leading heating specialists Lord Combustion Services, we are sharing profiles of key staff.
Having been appointed as a director of Lord Combustion Services at the start of 2021, Greg Jones talks about his career with the company, his work overseeing the services department, as well as his approach to coping under pressure.
When did you join Lord Combustion Services and what are the main responsibilities in your role?
I have been with the company since 2011. I look after the service department, which covers all the planned maintenance work as well as the reactive and breakdown service. The reactive side can certainly be challenging at times. Thankfully, we have a great team with around 35 engineers in the field to tackle any challenge the day may present.
Which qualifications have you achieved?
I joined Lord as an apprentice, attaining a BTEC and later an HNC in Building Services Engineering from Birmingham City University. I also studied Computer Aided Design (CAD) and gained an NVQ in Project Management. In the early days, I was doing my normal day at Lords and then heading to college on the evening until 9pm.
What do you enjoy about your role?
I like working closely with the team at Lords and dealing with customers day to day. You get to meet some interesting characters, so the business is always an interesting place to work.
What impact did Covid-19 have upon your work?
Covid did not stop us operating, but it certainly put a lot of pressure on us to ensure we were able to continue operating safely. Our approach as a company has not really changed. We provide critical services to many of our customers, including the NHS and nursing homes. knowing how essential it is to keep their heating and hot water services operating, we knew we had to adapt quickly to ensure government guidelines were being followed and ensure the correct PPE was available.
What advice would you give somebody starting out in their career with Lord?
Do not stress out. You have got the backing of a good team behind you who will support everyone at every step of the way. Understand that you will not know everything about the industry so keep learning and welcome the support the team offers you.
