Lord Combustion Services makes progress on net zero one year after taking Pledge

Commercial heating, hot water and ventilation specialist Lord Combustion Services is celebrating its progress towards its climate goals in its first year since making the West Midlands Net Zero Pledge.

After signing the pledge in April 2022, the award-winning Black Country business has been rolling out initiatives to minimise its environmental impact and help clients reduce their carbon footprint.

Administered by Sustainability West Midlands on behalf of the West Midlands Combined Authority, the West Midlands Net Zero Business Pledge is undertaken by businesses wanting to be part of the region’s drive to “become a net zero carbon economy by 2041”. A new website has been launched, highlighting businesses like Lord Combustion Services who have stepped up to take action.

Lord Combustion Services stepped up its drive to improve fuel and energy efficiency after marking its 40th anniversary last year. The company made the West Midlands Net Zero Business Pledge during a visit by West Midlands Mayor Andy Street.

To help clients improve their energy efficiency, Lord provides advice and support that includes undertaking energy surveys and equipment efficiency checks.

Retrofit options

The business has converted existing natural gas boiler installations to hybrid systems by installing air source heat pumps. It offers retrofit options for existing buildings, including energy-efficient control strategies, efficient boiler systems, renewables and variable speed drives.

As well as increasing the number of clients using more energy-efficient systems, Lord is working towards a target of becoming carbon neutral itself and has converted its vehicle fleet to low-emission vehicles, including hybrid and fully electric.

The company’s dedication to reducing its environmental impact is also reflected in its accreditation for ISO 14001, the standard for environmental management systems.

Managing Director Stuart Smith commented: “I am very proud of the strides Lord has made over the past 12 months to reduce the environmental impact of our clients and our own business operations.

Environmental ambition

“As a company specialising in the installation and maintenance of commercial heating, ventilation and hot water systems, we are committed to improving energy efficiency within our sector.

“Specialising in retrofitting and energy efficiency improvements to existing buildings, it is our ambition to help all our clients work towards net zero.”

Sustainability West Midlands CEO Anna Bright said: “With the national focus on energy prices and the need to operate efficiently we appreciate the inroads made by Lord Combustion Services. By leading by example they are making an impact which will encourage others to follow.”

Having opened for business in 1982, Lord now has a team of 45 engineers and support staff, delivering services for more than 1,000 sites across the Midlands, including 300 schools and hundreds of health sites. In 2021 Lord was recognised for its achievements in reducing clients’ environmental impact by winning the sustainability trophy at the West Midlands Business Masters Awards.
