Historic Buildings Heating & Cooling
Heritage Heating & Cooling
We have experience of working within historic buildings and those which require care and consideration when undertaking service maintenance or undertaking replacement/refurbishment works.
Factors which are considered include listed buildings consent, tight control of internal temperatures and humidity to preserve the building fabric and contents within and risk assessment of leakage within buildings.
The majority of modern heating systems have been designed for buildings that have a different relation from older buildings between heat and moisture. Older houses, typically built, were designed to heat one room at a time and heat up and cool down more slowly.
When completing any renovation work, particularly when selecting a suitable alternative heating solution, understanding the relationship between airflow, heat and humidity in older properties is essential. It is important that considerations for maintaining a comfortable indoor atmosphere are matched with maintaining the building’s structure.
Our team has become accustomed to high thresholds of comfort, but modern heating methods for a historical setting are often inappropriate. Heating options poorly chosen can cause problems with preservation.

HEATING & VENTILATION
“It is a sad fact that many involved in building services engineering pay little attention
to the history of the industry in which they are involved. While we obviously need
to ensure that our buildings are serviced in such a way to meet the needs of the 21st
Century, all too often we sweep away our engineering past to replace this with modern
technology and hi-tech solutions without consideration of what is being lost.”

The Heritage Group
The Heritage Group was established in 1973 with the main purpose of discovering and recording all aspects of building engineering services history. The website aims to inform persons interested in learning about the history of the Building Engineering Services industry from its beginnings in the Industrial Revolution.
